What Happens When Police Are Forced to Reform?
this is what i want
What are your thoughts on the natural evolution or the natural changing nature of police responsibilities?
History of policing
Founding fathers wanted police to be control.
Town criers = volunteers who kept watch
Population grew 1760 1.5 mil colonist
As it increased had formal crimal justice system
An a lot like now a days
East had police chief chosen by mayor
West had sheriff chosen by people
Sheriff enforced gun control.
Slavery corrupted justice system
Gov. used police to enforce laws such as
Grim crow law that deprived the afr. Ame of rights given
1870 15 amendment gave slaves some rights
So much of these government power to have police enforce laws for them stayed thru the years and instead of the government looking like the bad guy now the police became the bad guy.
As society changes, it is the responsibility of everyone to change with it. What was not acceptable when I was growing up is becoming acceptable now. Let’s say for example possession of marijuana use to be an arrest, but now is pretty much legal in most places, or is just a ticket.
So, police have had to change and adapt to these changes in order to be able to properly perform their jobs.
Do you believe that reforming and/or defunding are part of the natural changing nature of policing? Are they in a continuum of change instead of existing on opposite ends, as portrayed by the media and politicians? Explain
Reforming is a natural part of society. As the world change police must also change with it, and is true that it is difficult to change a police culture, but must police officers are willing to change.
On the video
Reforming police
The officer explains that people believe that there is an
Us against them mentality, but the reality is that that’s not the case. Officers most of the time connect with the people and the areas where they work. And a lot of the times officers know personal things about residents that not even friends and family know.
In a way we are sometimes like a priest
you can confide in me and I will help you as much as possible.
Some people might live in opposite ends and that is usually when they have had some type of negative police interaction, but the media to me just likes to start more problems that solutions.
Do reforming and defunding ultimately have the same goal (i.e.: safer community, protection, etc.? Explain
I don’t believe that they do.
I think that those who want the change are more drawn by the negative things that some officers have done
They claim public safety, but in the end the only people that they are advocating for is themselves.
Like Reforming police video explains
Kids are out there killing each other, but yet the real focus of those communities is to have Police panic —-
When we then see the
Defunding the police video
it sounded so nice when One of the speakers said in a crisis call with Someone who is mentally unstable
Lets Replace someone with a weapon (the police in this scenario) for someone who can sit next to them. And help them with their problems.
Again sounds nice until you send a mental health professional and that person gets seriously hurt.
As a matter of fact there has been many occasions where places like banyar or Jackson crisis has sent someone to pick up a patient and they end up calling guess who yes the police. And we end up having to control the situation.
We have a lot of Problem in the community
For example, growing up the police became our friends in the neighborhood . if we skipped class, they made sure that our parents whooped our behinds, but now if an officer tells a parent to do that it would be seen as unsensitive. So therefore police now has to adapt to being far more detached than before.
There has also been many instances where a police approaches a child to say hi, and the parent Janks them back and say don’t talk to the police.
Ive had kids walk up to me and ask if I am going to kill them
And when I ask why they would say that the answer was because my mom said that you guys kill people.
Dallas police chief David Brown … society problems / failure are thrown to police
Everyone is willing to jump in and judge, but the Community needs to have a part to help police keeping the community safe Instead of the I don’t talk to police or help police mind set
