RESPOND TO Nyssa-Kay Henry POLICING: The importance of recruitment, selection and training with regards to professional policing is to maintain law, order and achieve compliance by demonstrating effective use of force, while maintaining self-control. This is important because when police officers are granted the opportunity to practice coercive use of force there should be proper training, monitoring, management, and counselling given during the recruitment and training process. In the field of policing there should always be a standard recruitment criterion followed to hire people that are interested in joining the police force. The recruitment criteria should not only focus on physical fitness and capabilities but also on people’s ability to use good judgement, and knowledge of policing. It is important for recruitment to occur in the field of professional policing to know if people of interest are physically fit to carry out their job effectively. During recruitment people of interest should be given clear information about the role and responsibilities of policing. This is the second attempt for people to decide if the job of policing is a good career fit. Police officers who are responsible for recruitment should not select or eliminate people base on their person biases, but instead follow the recruitment policy of policing to make fear judgement.
RESPOND TO Georgia Kombogiorgas POLICING: Professional policing depends on the recruitment, selection, and training of those individuals correctly that would make differences in the criminal justice system. One of my favorite quotes from the chapter was, “Developing a leader is a long-term process in which encouragement, modeling, and support are combined with natural skills,” and that “… the training should begin on the first day of an officer’s career” (Haberfeld, 2018, p. 151). Officers are required to, and should, experience these intensive training programs that test their leadership skills, patience, extent of logic, reasoning, and problem solving, and how these have the potential to factor in with the amount of an impact they are able to make while working for the department. This is why the pentagon of police leadership is important; because “By offering leadership training at the basic academy level, it will be possible to identify the level of readiness of officers for future supervisory positions within the department, and further down the road” (Haberfeld, 2018, p. 158). By offering training to officers at the early points of their stages in the criminal justice departments, we are able to analyze who would eventually branch out or become well-developed and/or sophisticated enough to be promoted and who can lead to better developments in different branches of criminal justice, whether they even change careers or not. Having professional police requires putting officers through extensive training where they can thicken their skin and develop skills and tools they can use to improve themselves and to actually become professional and promoted down the line.
RESPOND TO Nina Tenten CORRECTIONS: Mears (2006) examines the effectiveness of supermax prisons as well as in the course reading by Henningsen, Johnson, and Wells (1999). Supermax prisons have held a popular opinion ever since getting tough on crime became the forefront of how to better deter society from committing crime. Supermax prisons were created for those who are deemed as the most dangerous or violent of criminals. These extreme circumstances that prisoners are held under do not violate any constitutional rights, however they are speculated as being a form of total control and abusive (Henningsen et al., 1999). Some prisoners may be violent both in prisons and out of them which makes supermax prisons a place to house any uncooperative inmates. Of course, with Supermax prisons being a panacea for violent offenders, they can be costly in the end. In fact, Henningsen et al. states that they are potentially the priciest of all prison experiments ever put into action (Henningsen et al., 1999). I do believe that there are flaws within this system, as with many systems, even though they are effective with their purpose. Even with my thoughts of Supermax prisons being deemed as necessary, I could not even begin to imagine an alternative for managing the “worst of the worst
RESPOND TO Xiomara Perez CORRECTIONS: Supermax prisons are known as separate housing units within a maxium-security prison. They are also known as security housing units and maximum control comlexes (Henderson, 53).The purpose of supermax prisons were to initially increase the safety of prison staff, other inmates, and the public. What generally places an inmate in a supermax prison is their history of “violent or disruptive behavior while incarcerated” (Henningsen, 53). There are also some supermax facilities who house prisons who are part of a special population (such as those on death row) and who are considered the “worst of the worst,” who threaten the security of the guards and other prisoners.
