The Topic
According to Cunningham and Reich, “The popular view of the Middle ages—often referred to as the Dark Ages—is that of a period of isolated and ignorant people with little outside of their own immediate surroundings” (p. 187). In your essay, argue against this popular view of the “dark ages.” Support your argument using detailed evidence from all of the following cultural advances.
The advances in civilized culture during the Carolingian Renaissance put forward by Charlemagne, especially educational advances. (Be sure to mention how Monasticism played a major role in these advances.)
At least one of the art works or architectural works built during the Ninth to Eleventh centuries (be sure the art works were made or built in the Ninth to Eleventh centuries, and are discussed in Chapter Nine and/or in the Interactive file for Chapter 9).
Evidence from the epic poem Beowulf (discussed in Chapter 9). Specific sections from the text of Beowulf are also included as the outside reading for this chapter in Module 5.
