Compose an essay that compares and contrasts two (2) ethical theories/philosophers discussed this semester. The ultimate goal of the paper is to argue in support of one theory against another, so you will have to “get behind” one of our authors. But a good argument means that you respect the “opponent”, so be sure you develop the opposition’s position as strongly as you can.
Use the questions at the end of the chapters and/or the discussion board posts as a way to think about the focus/thesis of your essay.
Please begin your essay with a well-developed “thesis statement”. A thesis statement should be a paragraph that tells the reader what will be developed in the essay, as well as the final result of the argument.
You do not have to do external research for the paper, but if you do you must use proper citation. Do not plagiarize! I expect you to work with our text and supplied on-line material as your main sources. You can use a few guiding quotations from the text in your essay, but use direct quotations sparingly in the essay. Do not use long quotations.
You have the opportunity to go back and re-read chapters and sharpen your views on these thinkers. Don’t rely too heavily on your past essays; rather, re-work and develop your ideas into a clear and persuasive argument. Do NOT simply cut and paste passages from your previous essays.
Suggested style format: Begin with your thesis statement. The next section should analyze the philosopher you will disagree with. But do not engage in an evaluation in this section–simply explain the philosopher’s view. The following section should discuss the philosopher you will agree with but, again, avoid an evaluation in this section and focus on an explanation of the view. Finally, in the last section, engage in the defense of one view over the other. The trick to a good argument is to draw from the prior two sections in the final analysis part. And remember to give the philosopher you disagree with some room to defend himself. A good argument respects the opponent.
