Choose and answer both of the two essay questions below. Each of your answers should be about 500 words in length, as a rough guideline. Explain your answer carefully (pretend your reader is not in our class and does not already know the material). And be sure to answer all parts of the question.
You may consult our readings, your notes, and other course materials on our Canvas course page. A bibliography, however, is not needed. But you will receive very little credit for content that is not in your own words, and so it is best to keep quotations to a minimum.
Exam Questions
1. Present and explain Searle’s Chinese Room Argument. Explain how it is meant to be an argument against the possibility of Strong AI. Then choose one of the follow objections to the Chinese Room Argument: the Systems Reply, the Robot Reply, or the Brain Simulator Reply. Explain the reply and what reasons one might give in its favor. Do you think the reply is successful? Why or why not?
2. What is the philosophical problem of personal identity, as we have discussed and read about in this course? [Explain]. What was Locke’s theory of personal identity (also discussed in our readings and discussion as the Memory Criterion of Personal Identity)? Present and explain that view carefully. What advantages or reasons can be offered in support of that theory of personal identity?
Select and explain two objections to the Memory Criterion of Personal Identity. What do you think is the best reply to those objections, if one were to defend the Memory Criterion (either Locke’s version or a revised version of the view). Is the reply successful?
