Answer the following prompts by reading and watching the sources provided:
How did Durkheim and Marx focus on large historical trends and how they shaped people’s lives?
In what ways can Durkheim’s definition of social facts be applied to suicide and infant mortality? For example, how does Durkheim explain that suicide is caused by factors external to the individual, and how does the video show that infant mortality in Rochester, New York, is affected by toxic stress produced by the inner city environment?
What is toxic stress? Why and how might it contribute to SIDS and low birth weight, according to the video? How could US health services use the social facts in the video to devise better policies to serve pregnant women in areas of poverty?
How does Marx’s model of alienation apply his view of social class to the nature of jobs under capitalism? What are workers alienated from? In what ways might some current American jobs produce alienation?
You will be graded on how well you select the most relevant information, how concisely you present it (avoiding ‘padding’) and the clarity of your writing. MLA or APA format can be used. No need for a reference page.
Reminder of guidance:
1) Introduction paragraph: focus on the concepts as the controlling ideas of the essay. Connect Durkheim and Marx.
2) Body paragraphs: include at least one quote (from any of the sources), but always follow a quote with a paraphrase to show understanding.
3) Judiciousness: Pick the best quotes from a source, not just any quote.
4) Conclusion: Draw together your thoughts into a strong takeaway that the reader will remember.
5) Grammar: Focus on clarity. Use spelling and grammar check in Word. Get a friend or relative to read the essay back to you if you have someone willing to do that.
6) References: You do not need a Bibliography – just put the author and year in brackets (or video title)
7) Outside sources: You can use other sources to supplement the ones in the module but not in place of those sources.
