the material in Chapter 3 on culture and becoming familiar with the concepts of
culture, ethnocentrism, and cultural relativism, read the article, “Body
Ritual Among the Nacirema” by Anthropologist Horace Miner (click Nacirema
Article TAB in MODULE 3).
Next, post a
thread (title it with your name) under the Nacirema forum.
Discuss TWO
aspects of Nacirema culture that you find particularly troublesome or bizarre.
Be sure to name the TWO aspects and discuss what specifically you deem
troublesome or bizarre. Next, discuss the concept of ethnocentrism. That is, is
it possible that a reason you find the cultural aspect bizarre or troublesome
is due, at least in part, to ethnocentric thinking? Why or why not? Be
specific. Use the information from our book to define and discuss
ethnocentrism. Also bring in the concept of CULTURAL RELATIVISM to the
discussion and use the book to define this. Again, word for word quotations
need be applied here to discuss the two concepts.
*I am expecting
a HIGH amount of detail in this initial post. That is, describe the TWO
characteristics you find troublesome or bizarre in a high amount of detail. Use
direct quotations from the Nacirema article to describe the two
characteristics. Word for word quotations are best. Again, be very detailed.
Discuss in detail the specific aspects you find troublesome or bizarre. Include
comparisons with our own culture and/or other cultures you are aware of and
have experienced. This is to be a lengthy section. Divide the section
into two parts: TROUBLESOME/BIZARRE ASPECT NUMBER 1 (the discuss it in detail)
and a second section, TROUBLESOME/BIZARRE ASPECT NUMBER 2. Use capital letters
for the two section headings like I did.
To
quote statements from the article OR the textbook (information from Chapter 3)
simply use quotation marks at the beginning and end of each word-for-word
quote. It is NOT necessary to cite the author’s last name, page number, year of
publication, etc.
Be
sure to use separate paragraphs for each of the 2 troublesome or bizarre
aspects. Do NOT run them together in a single, lengthy paragraph.
